In The Enchantment of Modern Life, Jane Bennett asks the pointed question: "What's to love about an alienated existence on a dead planet?" in reference to the assumption that enchantment is no longer relevant under conditions of modernity. The paintings in Unexpected Visitors are inspired by this question to explore enchantment and wonder as meaningful phenomena, which persist in contemporary life.
Unexpected Visitors explores the personal geography of grieving in relationship to enchantment. The works are an investigation of degenerative disease and loss affecting a beloved family member, spilling out across multiple “family” sites in multiple provinces.
